Robert R. Church Park, which opened in 1899, was the city’s first park for African-American citizens and visitors and was built by the first Black millionaire in the city, Robert Reed Church (1839-1912.) The monument is in the center of the park, the bronze bust of Robert R. Church, Sr. sits on top. The columns surrounding the monument illustrate the outline of the original auditorium. The monument was erected in memory of, and dedicated to, Robert Church, Jr. the son of Robert R Church Sr.
